Police seek ATV riders seen in mandatory evacuation zones

Justice, News

Harbour Grace RCMP are asking for the public’s help identifying ATV drivers recently seen driving through mandatory evacuation zones in Conception Bay North.

Anyone with information about these operators or their ATVs is asked to contact Harbour Grace RCMP at 709-596-5014.

As the wildfire relief efforts continue, RCMP officers are patrolling the evacuation zones by road, trail and water to ensure public safety and to deter and detect criminal activities.

Failure to comply with an evacuation order — including unauthorized access of a mandatory evacuation area — is an offence under the Emergency Services Act. Officers are issuing summary offence tickets to those who enter an evacuation zone without prior authorization from the Provincial Emergency Operation Centre.

Evacuation orders remain in place in Small Point–Adam’s Cove–Blackhead–Broad Cove, Kingston, Western Bay, Ochre Pit Cove and a portion of Northern Bay.

It is essential that all unauthorized personnel stay away from mandatory evacuation areas until you receive the all-clear from an official source. When you re-enter an evacuated zone without authorization, you are putting yourself and first responders in danger.

Attempting to re-enter an evacuation zone also has the potential to disrupt firefighting efforts, as well as the restoration of hydro service, road repairs, water sampling, and other crucial steps that must be taken to ensure the safe return of everyone to the community.

RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador thanks our communities for your support, patience, and cooperation during these relief efforts.
